Free Box Appropriate?

Pin It Now!
There will be a new section added to the next issue of Free Box the Magazine, which will be a recurring column and that is called:  Free Box Appropriate?  I have come across many examples in my free boxing career, however, I just came upon this one two nights ago while bicycling home:
What do you think?  Prescription medication Free Box appropriate?  I will let you be the judge...

New Portland Free Boxer: Elizabeth Haidle!

Pin It Now!

Elizabeth is my super cool new neighbor.  She and I were out and about in the neighborhood last Friday and came upon this somewhat defunct chair, however, it's super cool looking and I am sure with a little love it's going to be amazing.

Fall is Upon Us...almost

Pin It Now!
It's the last day of September and the rain is upon us.  The free box season will be winding down soon, but do you remember how amazing and beautiful Sunday was?  I found a box of candles that day, which I am going to use for my Day of  the Dead party:

But the real winner for September's photo was this adorable set of kiddy kitchen play toys, also very colorful:

This is what I saw on Taylor this evening:
Yes, there is a naked lady picture.
Questionable for a free box?  Perhaps.

Alistair Buchanan's International Free Box Day Report!

Pin It Now!
What a lovely day it was, the Second Internationale. In the uncertain end of Summer, with Autumn's first and curious reachings of her singed bat's wings into the edges of innocence and bright days. Guess what I found in a free box in Berlin? That's right, a big pink butt plug.

This report is accompanied by no photographic evidence.

I hope everyone had a fabulous International Free Bod Day.  I took a few pictures of the event and tried to get photos of people with their favorite finds.

There was a traveling group from Australia that were loving this exchange!

He just got this outfit!  It made me happy :)

And, of course, I couldn't have done it without the lovely Meghan Sinnott and Maddy!
This was not her favorite item.  I just wanted her to model it for me :)

Thank you everyone!  You are all so amazing!

2nd International Free Box Day Celebration this Weekend!

Pin It Now!
Yes, it's that time of year again, Sunday, August 17:  International Free Box Day!
Come join me and my lovely co-host, Meghan Sinnott, once again for a giant free box (clothing and item exchange) at Colonel Summers Park starting at 4 p.m. and will go till about 8 p.m  This event is also a finger food potluck, so bring along some goodies to share.  Oh, and if you have any lawn games to play, aka, corn hole or hula hoops or crochet, bring those along, too.
Last year was such a blast!  I hope to see you there.
If you can't make it to the celebration, no problem, just put out a free box in celebration of the day and spread the word, please!

ps - the leftovers will go to a charity still to be decided.  Please bring items that you know someone can use and you are sure don't belong in the trash.  Thanks!

Ellensburg's Little Free Library

Pin It Now!
I was born and raised in Ellensburg, WA. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon Ellensburg's Little Free Library and grabbed a book for my Mom to check out.  She hadn't heard of Little Free Libraries and was super excited because she had a bunch of books that needed a home, so I took them down on my way out of town and that was all I thought of that.
Well, I guess since my Mom has ready a few books from the lending library that she has really enjoyed and now is a huge fan (not that she wasn't a fan before).

I was just in E-burg last weekend for my Mom's birthday and she had a book to take to the library and of course she wanted to see if there was anything new.  Here's a pic of my Mom perusing the library:
And here I am proudly distributing the zine:
I have to say that this is one of the nicer Little Free Libraries with a chair to sit down and ponder if you really want to read the book you have picked out or not and some very nice landscaping:

Pedalpalooza 2014 Free Box Scavenger Hunt Results!

Pin It Now!

Well, I have to say fun was had by all.  There were three teams and two free box newbies, one of remarked that he would have to start checking free boxes out more often!  Hooray!

It was a beautiful summer day, the first day of summer in fact.  Myself and Meghan Sinnott, my amazing co-host, ended up having a wonderful day of leisurely biking to the end point (the Waypost) and looking for free boxes and checking out yard sales, a lot of which had corresponding free boxes.  Yes, I did get a few items and I have to say you couldn't ask for a more fun relaxing way to spend a summer day.  I should do this more often.
Meghan in front of the free porch in North Portland; it was my first time there!

Meghan and Maddy, the amazing free box finding dog!

And the winners!
One of the scavenger hunt items was to piece together a coordinated outfit from free boxes.  Well, the whole team found outfits and they were definitely the most coordinated.  I had them sing "hey, hey, we're the Monkees" as they modeled because their outfits just reminded me of the Monkees.  Carye's hat is pretty amazing.  It's crocheted, of course.
Here are some items they found:

This is a Portland Skyline Puzzle; pretty sweet!

The Book Shade, to be demoed later on the blog post.
After we checked all the items off from both teams, the winning team made a free box out of a suitcase they found in front of the Waypost, which attracted some passersby, who actually partook in some of the items and were actually super excited about what they got.

One of the tasks in the scavenger hunt was to write a haiku and the "best" haiku would get points.  I really like the second place team's haiku:

I got it for free
It may be wet and moldy
But hey, it was free

The first place team also found a couple of hilarious items.  We couldn't figure this one out.  Is it doll underwear or a sample?  It say XXL, which is very strange.
It's definitely a questionable item, which has sparked a new column in the zine entitled: Questionable.  It will feature a questionable find or item in a free box, which as you all know, there are plenty of those type of things to be found.  We may even have a whole issue dedicated to it!

There were some folks hanging out at the Waypost that really liked my shirt -- I heart free boxes -- made by Jennifer Jansons, who was on the second place team.  They asked where I got it, and I said "it's your lucky day because we have at least 5 of them right here, right now!"  She was super excited and got a shirt and they grabbed some zines as well:

Like I said, fun was had by all, and I am sure this will happen again next year, so be on the lookout!

Free Box Scavenger Hunt Tomorrow!

Pin It Now!
Yes, it's tomorrow, the first day of summer, at noon starting at Colonel Summer's Park.
I just want to say that this is going to be amazing.  There's been a very limited reprint of all four issues of Free Box Frank created by Andrew Steers and Sean Rawls, which you may find in a free box or could win as a prize!
And have you ever been wondering when you will find a I heart Free Boxes t-shirt?  Well, we've got 'em thanks to Jennifer, creator of the silkscreen.  This, too, you might find in a free box or could be a very cool prize.
From Meghan and myself and Jennifer, we hope to see you tomorrow and may the best free boxers win!

Free Box Photo for June and Pedalpalooza Scavenger Hunt!

Pin It Now!
Yesterday was a wonderful free box day on SE Yamhill.  I came upon these clown shoes and bow tie, which I left for another clown in the making; plus I happened upon the end of a garage sale and they were just putting all the leftovers out for free.  She had super cool stuff and I grabbed quite a lot.

I would like to mention that the Pedalpalooza Free Box Scavenger Hunt is next Saturday, June 21st, at noon at Colonel Summer's park, so if you think you are a free box aficionado, grab a friend or come alone and play!!! There will be prizes.
Here's the Pedalpalooza link:  http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/#21-4269
Hope to see you there.  By the way, if you are unable to participate, please put out an awesome free box with unique items (or not) for the scavenger hunt!
